Working with databases
We already know how to create variables, write and change their values, and how to insert variables into a template. But so far we have just been making up the information for the variables ourselves. Now let’s learn how to pull in some real data instead. Dumpo just prepared a database for us.
A database is a system that stores site information in an organized manner. In our case, this is just a PHP file, since we have little information to store.
In order to get information about the product, we will use its unique number, or item number, which is stored in the database. This type of number is called an identifier in programming, i.e., an id.
Our database contains useful commands. For example, get_product_title will help us retrieve the name of a particular product. To do this, we need to indicate the appropriate item number in parentheses.
The commands that we will use to get data from the database have been developed by Muffin’s studio and are not part of the PHP language. They do not work outside of the studio.
Let’s include the database at the beginning of the script, which will grant us access to useful commands. Then let’s change the value of $title to get_product_title, and then indicate the product number in parentheses.
