We retrieve data from the input field using input.value

We learned how to use the script to change the text on the page when the user submits the form. We have a newsletter subscription form, and now we need to inform the user that they have successfully subscribed to the newsletter. The message will look like this:

The e-mail address was added to our list of newsletter recipients.

The e-mail address in the message must be the one that was entered by the user. How can we get it?

The special property in the input fields (value) can help us out here. Suppose a page has an input input field:

<input type="text">

The boss passed by the office, and he entered his name there: “Muffin”. By using the value property, we can obtain data from this input field. And afterwards, we can display this data in the console, for example:

let input = document.querySelector('input');
console.log(input.value);
// Displays: Muffin

And we can display data from the input field directly on the page. Imagine that we have a paragraph on the page that we found and saved to the paragraph variable. We can do the following:

paragraph.textContent = input.value;

And now what the user entered in the input field will be displayed on the page as the textual content of the paragraph element.

In our case, the user enters their address in the field with the subscription-email class. Find it and tell JavaScript to display the received data on the page.

Why shouldn’t we read the text from the input field using textContent? If we tried to do this, then we would get an empty string. In JavaScript, form fields do not have textual content. Rather, their values are stored in value.

    1. On line 10, declare a variable email and write an element to it with the class subscription-email.
    2. Inside the event handler, change the value of message.textContent from 'Form submitted!' to email.value.
    3. In the mini-browser, click on the “Subscribe” button and make sure that the same address that was entered in the input field appears on the page.
