Declare a variable

We switched the theme on the page, but it turned out that the lines with the code are long and hard to read. We also had to search twice for the exact same element using querySelector. We already found it once. Why do we have to search for it again?

There is a solution! And its name is the variable.

A variable is a way of storing data by giving it an understandable name.

We can create a variable in JavaScript or, as programmers like to say, we can declare it using the keyword let. It is followed by the name of the variable. After the declaration, we need to add or assign some value to the variable:

let variableName = 'I am a variable value!';

The variable name can be almost anything, but it should not start with a number, and '_' and '$' are the only allowed special characters. In addition, JavaScript has reserved words that cannot be used to name variables. Variable names are case sensitive: header, Header and HEADER are different variables. But the most important thing is to ensure that the variable really makes the code more understandable. Its name should describe what is stored in it.

You can save anything you like to variables, including elements:

let header = document.querySelector('header');

When a variable occurs in the code, the browser substitutes the value assigned to it instead of its name. Thanks to this, we can write the following, for example:

console.log(header);
header.classList.add('new-class');

Please note that we only use let to declare a variable. After that, we use the variable simply by indicating its name.

Let’s create a variable in our program and include an element with the page class in it. This variable will help us to make our instructions shorter and more understandable. And at the same time we should make sure that we have not broken anything.

The keyword let appeared in JavaScript in 2015. Before that the word var was used to declare variables. It works in almost the same way as let, but there are some differences. We will discuss them in the following chapters of the course.

    1. On the first line, declare a variable named page using let and assign the value document.querySelector('.page') to it.
    2. On the next page replace document.querySelector('.page') with the page variable.
    3. Similarly, replace document.querySelector('.page') on the last line.
